Feliz día de la Madre

Posted on Tuesday, 15 May 2012 in Chile
Note: I originally wrote this blog entry for my old Spanish school in Australia (The Spanish Cat), hence the error in the date above.

Hola compañeros,
Espero que esten bien!
All is well here in Santiago. Finding myself more and more accustomed to Chilean Spanish, the other day I was even told that I speak like a Chileno, which is a little bit scary (at least for an Australian)! I have picked up a few more classes and am now running on a pretty full schedule from morning to night Monday to Friday and even two classes on Saturday! I am still enjoying classes and the students determination to learn always keeps me motivated.
Chilean Dish of the week
Charquican

Some say this is the only truly ´Chilean´ dish which is not claimed by any other country as it is a traditional food of the Mapuches, who were the indigenous inhabitants of Chile prior to Spanish colonisation and still exist in modern Chile. This dish is usually made from potatoes, minced meat, pumpkin, white corn, onion and sometimes peas. I had the pleasure of tasting this delicious concoction whilst having lunch at a students house on the weekend.

Fútbol Chileno
Union Española fans at the start of the game

Last Wednesday I went to a football game in the ´Copa Libertadores´, which for those of you who are interested in sports is like the South American Champions League. A local team from Santiago called Union Española were playing Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires. Boca Juniors happen to be one of my favourite teams in South America, but being in Chile and attending the game with a Union Española fan, on the day I was supporting Española. The atmosphere at the stadium was great, the visiting Boca fans being especially loud and rowdy. In the end Española lost 3-2 and were eliminated from the tournament with Boca advancing through. I was actually taken to the game by a student for ´English Class´, although we didn´t manage to get in too much English during the game!
Mothers Day
My friends uncle, Paella for mothers day

Happy Mothers day Mum. With family being a very important part of the social structure here in Chile, Mothers Day is a big time to get together with your family, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents from all sides of the family for a big celebration. I had a very nice day as I spent the day with my Chilean mother and her family, she is the mother of one of my best friends and has looked after me a lot during my time here. It was a very nice day and we ate Paella, thanks for making me feel part of the family guys!

To finish this week here is a one of my favourite songs from a Chilean group called Inti Illimani whom have been around in Chile since 1967. Inti Illimani were on tour in Italy in 1973 when General Pinochet seized power of the Chilean government from Salvador Allende, their music was banned by the Pinochet government and they were unable to return to Chile for around 15 years during the Pinochet regime.
